Judicial Independence

Without courts that can act independently, laws become promises that power can selectively ignore.

Context

An independent judiciary is the citizen’s protection against arbitrary power. In Lebanon, political influence over appointments, investigations, and institutional resources has repeatedly damaged public trust. Reform requires transparent judicial appointments, secure tenure, adequate resources, enforceable ethical standards, and protection from interference.

The Circle’s position

No reform is credible without an independent judiciary empowered to investigate, adjudicate, and enforce the law without political pressure.

Why It Matters

Judicial independence is essential for rights, investment, anti-corruption efforts, public safety, and confidence that every person and institution is accountable under the same law.
